Create a formatted screenplay without learning screenplay software

You do not need to start as a screenwriter. Describe what happens, identify who is speaking, and write their dialogue. Scene Dept. builds the formatted screenplay from those elements, keeping the creative document connected to the shots you need to capture.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

Morning light spills across the curtains. Alex silences the alarm and opens the window.

What if the best part of your day happened before it really began?

A live excerpt. In your project, preview the full screenplay with a cover page, then print, download, or email the PDF.

Give your editor the context, too.

The plan and what happened on set, ready to hand over.

Notes for the editor

Leave notes on each shot while filming. Export them together, with shot numbers and descriptions for context.

A shot checklist to go

Print or download a snapshot of your shot list, including requirements and capture status. Keep a copy beside you on set.

Shot numbers, requirements, and status

Find them in Reports. Download a PDF or email it with a personal note, straight from your project.

How it works

Build the scene

Set the scene heading and add action, dialogue, parentheticals, or transitions. Enter the character directly with their dialogue. Insert elements above or below existing material as the scene develops.

See the formatting as you work

Open the live screenplay preview while editing. Use Outline for intent and talking points, Screenplay for action and dialogue, or desktop Split view for both. The outline and screenplay share scenes but do not automatically rewrite each other.

Add credits and export

Set the project title, writers, optional based-on credit, draft label, and contact details. Preview the screenplay with its cover page, then print, download the PDF, or email it with a note from Reports.

Send the production context

Reports also provides editor notes attached to individual shots and a static shot checklist with requirements and capture status. Hand off the story along with what happened during filming.

Example: a simple cold open

Add an action element describing the surprise, then a dialogue element with a character and their reaction. The preview places the character and dialogue in their screenplay layout. Connect a wide shot and a reaction close-up to the same scene so the production plan follows the writing.

Questions about screenplay formatting

Does Scene Dept. write the screenplay for me?

Scene Dept. generates the formatted document from the scene elements you write. It does not automatically turn an outline into a finished script. Compatible external AI assistants can connect through OAuth and MCP with your permission; a built-in AI writing helper is not available yet.

Does the PDF include a cover page?

Yes. The screenplay export includes a cover page with the project title and writer credits, plus optional based-on, draft, and contact information.

Can a beginner use the screenplay editor?

Yes. The editor asks for scene details, action, and dialogue rather than requiring you to manually position character names and dialogue on a page. You can also start with an outline and enable screenplay tools later.

Are editor notes attached to scenes or shots?

Editor notes belong to individual shots. The report includes shot identifiers and descriptions so the editor has context for your feedback.
